Vincent “Winnie” Mayer is a 1997 inductee of the University of Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame and at age 96, was the oldest living captain of a University of Delaware athletic team. In October
2001, the University awarded Mayer its Medal of Distinction, the highest honor that it bestows on citizens of the state and region for significant service to the University and contributions to
society. Winnie was recognized as an outstanding athlete and strong proponent of Blue Hen sports. Mayer attended the University of Delaware from 1929 through 1933. He was a three-time letterman in
football and led the Blue Hens to the Class B Eastern title in 1931. Winnie was named to the University of Delaware all-time football team when UD celebrated its football centennial in 1989. Mayer
was a standout two-way performer at end. He was known in his playing days as “Sheet Iron” because of his toughness. Winnie also played varsity baseball at Delaware, and was captain of the team in
1933. Mayer began his athletic career at Newark High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was captain of the Yellowjacket football and baseball squads. Mayer helped to
organize the Newark Touchdown Club and served as its first president. He has sponsored a number of trophies awarded to University of Delaware and Newark High School athletes.



Every inductee into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame since our inaugural year in 1976 is represented on our website. Honoring the athletic excellence of these men and women is an integral part of Delaware sports history.
