Roman “Ray” Ciesinski

Ray had a combined coaching career at Newark High School of 513 wins and 227 losses as head coach of several sports including 33 Blue Hen Conference and State Championships  He also served as
Athletic Director and the head of the Physical Education Department.  Ray established the boys cross-country program at Newark High in 1959 and was a founder of that sport in the Blue Hen
Conference (BHC) in 1960.  The boys and girls  cross-country teams won three State Championships and three second and one third place finish.  The boys cross-country team won 16 Blue
Hen Conference Championships and had seven undefeated seasons…The boys track and field team won six Blue Hen Conference Championships…The girls cross-country team and girls Track and Field teams each
won two Blue Hen Conference Championships…His overall track and cross-country record was 401-139… His boys varsity basketball team won two Blue Hen Conference Championships …Ray served as head
coach of the gymnastics club for five years and the winter track team three years…Thirteen college, professional and Olympic athletes attribute their success to Ciesinski’s influence…He officiated
basketball, football, gymnastics and track and field…As a University of Delaware football defensive tackle from 1946-48, he played on the NCAA small college national champion team, winner of the 1946
Cigar Bowl in Tampa, Florida…Ray was inducted into the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2002.



Every inductee into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame since our inaugural year in 1976 is represented on our website. Honoring the athletic excellence of these men and women is an integral part of Delaware sports history.
